Preparedness Begins at Home: NRA Personal Protection In The Home Course

This intermediate-level course is designed for individuals who already have basic handgun experience and want to develop the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to defend themselves and their loved ones inside their home.

Led by veteran instructor Jim Mauney — a seasoned law enforcement officer, SWAT member, and emergency responder with over 50 years of real-world experience — this course combines classroom instruction with live-fire range time to give you confidence where it matters most.

This is not a basic pistol course. Students should be familiar with the operation of their handgun prior to attending.

What You’ll Learn

• Defensive shooting fundamentals and mindset 
• Legal aspects of using deadly force in the home 
• Strategies for home safety and awareness 
• Safe storage and access to firearms 
• Use of cover and concealment 
• Live-fire exercises simulating home defense scenarios

What You’ll Need to Bring

• A defensive handgun (semi-automatic or revolver) 
• 100-150 rounds of factory ammunition 
• Eye and ear protection 
• A strong-side hip holster (no shoulder or cross-draw holsters) 
• A valid photo ID 
• Pen and notebook (optional)
   

What to Wear

• Closed-toe shoes 
• High-neck shirt 
• Pants or jeans 
• Ball cap or brimmed hat
   

What Not to Bring or Wear

• No steel-cased or reloaded ammo 
• No low-cut shirts or open-toe footwear 
• No drugs, alcohol, or intoxicated individuals 
• No loaded firearms in the classroom — all must arrive unloaded and cased
